Cullercoats Bike & Kayak is excited to bring a new member of the team on board who will be focusing solely on developing our cycling activities. David Thompson is a Yorkshire native and was previously based at Dales Bike Centre.
After relocating to Tynemouth he saw the need for to create more opportunities for people to get out on two wheels and approached us here at CBK to make this happen. When asked about his plans David said: “As the name suggests, bikes have always been an integral part of the CBK business and my aim is to develop the opportunities for cycling in a social, relaxed way that is fun, friendly and accessible. For me, and us it’s all about the ride, the views, the people you meet whilst out on two wheels.”
David’s plans for the next few months involve developing the sales and hire side of the business by creating a NE home for Yorkshire-based bike brand Cotic. He’ll also be offering regular social rides, professionally guided local rides and longer drop n’ rides with our transport partners Liberty Coaches. He’ll also be establishing CBK as a Sustrans Volunteer Hub, with regular courses and resources for those who’d like to lead rides themselves. David will be drawing on decades of experience as well as multiple qualifications from British Cycling and Cytech.
Founder of the business, Simon Laing, is excited to see how things will develop under David’s leadership, “He understands our ethos, and that’s important. There are a lot of people using cycling to prove themselves these days, but that is just not our scene. Yes, it should be challenging, but it’s not all about fancy equipment, measuring performance or being faster than the next person. For David and I biking is about seeing something amazing, doing something that makes you feel good and hopefully ending up with a big smile on your face".
David adds, "This is a Strava free zone where you can reasonably wear what you want (as long as you can ride your bike), ride what you want (as long as it works), and it’s not a race to the finish."
