The British Canoe Union (BCU) 1 Star is the clearest stepping-stone to becoming a qualified paddler. Designed as your entry level award, the 1 Star is the standard people would typically reach after an introductory course of 6-8 hours quality water time.

Getting your 1 star will leave you in a fantastic position to get more from your time on the water. The emphasis of the course is on safe practice, fun and enjoyment. We supply all the equipment you’ll need to be comfortable on the water but if you do have your own boat please feel free to bring it along with you.

As ever, we go the extra mile at Cullercoats Bike & Kayak. Refreshments on arrival and lunch on the beach are included as part of the package.

Course Content: The course syllabus in available for download from the BCU website.

Prerequisites: Candidates must be water confident, and ideally should be able to swim (this is desirable but not essential).

Craft: This award will be undertaken in our fleet of sit-on-top kayaks.

Assessment Venue: A very sheltered or sheltered water venue is needed, we typically use Cullercoats Bay.
